Toilets - Running

Running toilets cannot only be a nuisance, but they can cost you money in wasted gallons of water.

Usually the problem is due to the chain on the flapper getting caught up or knotted on it and the flapper staying open. Sometimes the chain on the flapper breaks so that a new flapper assembly is necessary. Other times the running toilets is due to the shut-off float in the tank, which sometimes lifts too high in the tank, preventing the valve from shutting off completely. To fix this you can adjust the screw on the ballcock until the float stops the water at the correct level. The float should rub the side of the tank or any other parts.

For more information about running toilets consult our plumbing professionals.
